The Mediation Center of Charlottesville (MCC) has been providing mediation services to residents of Charlottesville and the surrounding counties since 1984. Mediation is an “alternative dispute resolution” process in which trained neutral mediators facilitate communication between parties, and without deciding the issues or imposing a solution on the parties, enable them to reach a mutually agreeable resolution to their dispute. The mediation process is always voluntary and confidential.
All our mediators are highly trained and experienced.
If you choose to mediate, MCC staff will guide you through an intake and screening process before scheduling a mediation.
At the mediation, mediators will review an Agreement to Mediate; establish ground rules that support good communication; ask each party to state what brought them to mediation and what they hope to accomplish; point out common ground and clarify issues that need to be resolved; help you start creating solutions; document points of agreement; and if agreement is reached, provide you with documentation of the agreement.
Mediations are sometimes referred by the court, or the police–in these cases there is no charge for the mediation. Other mediations are requested by the people involved in the conflict–for these mediations there may be a fee–based on a sliding scale.
